I really like starting by hand, provided it’s not me doing it of course.
Here’s a chap using his steering wheel, as you do. Note the gas cylinder, needed to make the hot bulb, er, hot.
They both started, eventually.
As did this, in the end.

And remember: thumb and fingers have to be on the same side of the handle.

Also: interesting use of a starting handle in
Ice Cold in Alex.

Heres a video of a tractor being started with a blank shotgun shell.

As it happens, there was a Marshall at the event. I’ve seen it started before and I think they used a lighted taper and hand cranking.

There’s a video out there of a Tiger tank being started by an inertia starter (wind up a flywheel and use its momentum).

I’ve only seen one started in person. Unfortunately, the vintage tractor show I used to attend changed venues a few years ago.
I am hoping to attend a steam tractor show with my father in law this summer.

Fascinating. Same idea as the Coffman cartridges used to start aero engines, I suppose?

Well, that’s one way of doing it!
